Dr. Grange is returning to his home planet, Malay. Accompanied by the pilot of the orbiter Penaltra, he is anxious to return to his family and the idyllic paradise he remembers. Some time ago Dr. Grange was in an accident. He was not told about the exact nature of the accident, but it left him in coma. Incredibly, he is not even sure how long he was in a coma, but it couldn’t have been more than 3 to 5 years, could it?
But things on Malay don’t quite reconcile with his recollections. Cities are gone; his brother’s farm has been overgrown with vegetation, and is inhabited by a colony of hostile Payeru, the large flying, furry creatures that he remembers as being civilized. It’s almost as though centuries have passed. Penaltra claims ignorance, but cautiously avoids answering any of Dr. Grange’s questions. Clearly Dr. Grange’s homecoming will have more surprises.
